News Women on the Verge Delays Broadway Breakdown for Second Time The world-premiere musical Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown has delayed the start of Broadway previews for a second time. The new Bartlett Sher-helmed production for Lincoln Center Theater will now begin performances Oct. 8 at the Belasco Theatre.

Women on the Verge, which features a multi-location set designed by Tony-winning scenic designer Michael Yeargan (South Pacific, The Light in the Piazza), was originally scheduled to begin previews Oct. 2, but LCT delayed public performances until Oct. 5 in order to allow for additional technical rehearsals.

On Sept. 29 Lincoln Center announced that additional technical rehearsals will be needed and Women on the Verge will not bow on Broadway until Oct. 8. The original Nov. 4 opening night remains in place. Ticket holders for the cancelled performances may reschedule their tickets or obtain a refund.

The anticipated Broadway musical boasts a cast of theatre veterans including Tony Award nominee Sherie Rene Scott (Everyday Rapture, The Little Mermaid), two-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone (Evita, Gypsy) and Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell (Kiss Me, Kate, Ragtime).

Also starring are Tony Award winner Laura Benanti (Gypsy, In the Next Room), Tony nominee Danny Burstein (South Pacific), Tony nominee de'Adre Aziza (Passing Strange), Tony nominee Mary Beth Peil (Nine, Sunday in the Park With George), Justin Guarini ("American Idol") and Nikka Graff Lanzarone (Seussical).

The Women on the Verge ensemble includes Julio Agustin, Alma Cuervo, John Carroll, Murphy Guyer, Rachel Bay Jones, Nina Lafarga, Yanira Marin, Sean McCort, Vivian Nixon, Luis Salgado, Jennifer Maria Sanchez, John Schiappa, Samantha Shafer, Phillip Spaeth, Matthew Steffens and Charlie Sutton. Based on Pedro Almodóvar's 1988 film of the same title, Women on the Verge has a score by David Yazbek and a book by Jeffrey Lane. The duo previously authored the Tony-nominated musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

Women on the Verge has choreography by Christopher Gattelli, musical direction by Jim Abbott, sets by Michael Yeargan, costumes by Catherine Zuber, lighting by Brian MacDevitt and sound by Scott Lehrer. The musical reunites the Tony Award-winning creative team from LCT's South Pacific, with the addition of MacDevitt and Abbott.

Here's how LCT bills Women on the Verge: "Both touching and hilarious, it's a story about women and the men who pursue them... finding them, losing them, needing them, and rejecting them. At the center is Pepa (Scott) whose friends and lovers are blazing a trail through 1980s Madrid. And why do they all keep showing up at her high-rise apartment? Is it her gazpacho? Along with Pepa, there's her missing (possibly philandering) lover, Ivan (Mitchell); his ex-wife of questionable sanity, Lucia (LuPone); Pepa's friend, Candela (Benanti), and her terrorist boyfriend; a power-suited lawyer (Aziza) plus a taxi driver (Burstein) who dispenses tissues, mints and advice in equal proportion. Mayhem and comic madness abound, balanced by the empathy and heart that are trademarks of Almodóvar's work. And of Bartlett Sher's too."
