News Woodie King, Jr. to Direct Fred Newman's Mr. Hirsch Died Yesterday at Castillo Theatre; Casting Announced Obie Award winner Woodie King, Jr. will direct a revival of Fred Newman's 1986 play Mr. Hirsch Died Yesterday, which will run Jan. 21-Feb. 15, at the Castillo Theatre. An official press opening is set for Jan. 20.

King's cast will include Lindsay Arber, Dana Berger, Debbie Buchsbaum, Lenora Fulani, Zoë Geltman, Joseph Mallon, Reynaldo Piniella, Ben Prayz, Katya Pucci and Moshe Yassur.

According to press notes, the play is semi-autobiographical and set in the 1940s Bronx: "Playing with philosophy, theatrical forms and storytelling, Mr. Hirsch Died Yesterday explores human identity and shared history when a Jewish writer named Fred meets an African American woman named Freda and find they share more than childhood memories. Can two people have the same history?"

King, the founder of New Federal Theatre, holds extensive New York and regional directing credits (including the 1988 Broadway run of Checkmates). He has received an Obie Award for Sustained Achievement, as well as an NAACP Image Award, a Joseph Jefferson Award and two Audelco Awards, among others.

Newman's other plays include Billie & Malcolm: A Demonstration, Lenin’s Breakdown, Outing Wittgenstein, Sally and Tom (The American Way), Stealin’ Home and Satchel: A Requiem for Racism.
