News Workshop of New Musical Pure Country Scheduled for Spring A workshop of the new musical Pure Country — adapted from the 1992 film of the same name — will be held in Manhattan in May, according to a casting notice.

Pure Country features music by Steve Dorff, lyrics by John Bettis and a book by Pete Masterson and Rex McGee (based on McGee's screenplay). Masterson will direct the workshop with musical direction by Eugene Gwozdz and choreography by Sean Curran. Randall L. Wreghitt, Ellen Rusconi and Chris Presley are producing the workshop, which is scheduled for April 28-May 23.

A staged reading of Pure Country was presented May 7, 2007, at New World Stages. That presentation featured High Fidelity's Will Chase, Tony Award winners Carlin Glynn (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) and Cady Huffman (The Producers) as well as James Moye (Urinetown) and Danny Rutigliano (The Lion King).

At that time, the musical was described as such: "Pure Country tells the story of Del Hubbard, a country music superstar known as 'Rusty,' who cracks from the pressure of his endless life on the road, escapes his tour, and returns to his Texas stomping grounds, hoping to find what he's missing."
