Vogel's archive includes drafts of most of her plays, teaching files and drafts of work by her students, which have included Sarah Ruhl, Nilo Cruz, Lynn Nottage and Quiara Alegría Hudes.

She is a playwright in residence at Yale Repertory Theater and has taught at the Yale School of Drama since 2008.

"It is difficult for a playwright to think of her script in the chaos of production as anything but ephemeral," Vogel said in a statement. "It is a significant honor for my work to be preserved in the remarkable company of Beinecke writers and artists."

"It is surprising that Beinecke had not acquired the archives of a female playwright before now, but I can't imagine a more fitting artist to be the first than Paula Vogel," Melissa Barton, the Beinecke's curator of drama and prose in the Yale Collection of American Literature, added. "We are very excited to welcome her archive to the Yale Collection of American Literature and to provide researchers access to this remarkable record of a great dramatist and teacher's artistic process."

Vogel, a Pulitzer Prize winner, has written How I Learned to Drive, The Long Christmas Ride Home, The Mineola Twins, The Baltimore Waltz, Hot 'N' Throbbing, Desdemona, The Oldest Profession and A Civil War Christmas. Indecent, a collaboration between Vogel and Rebecca Taichman (Sleeping Beauty Wakes, Milk Like Sugar), will be featured in La Jolla Playhouse's 2015-16 season. The play with music was inspired by the true story of the controversial 1922 Broadway debut of Sholem Asch's God of Vengeance.
