News "You Can't Stop the Beat": Hairspray Plays the Hollywood Bowl Starting Aug. 5 The Hollywood Bowl's summer production of the Tony-winning Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan musical Hairspray, which is based on the film of the same name, plays the famed California venue Aug. 5-7.

Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell directs and choreographs Hairspray, which boasts original Broadway stars Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur reprising their Tony-winning roles as Edna and Tracy Turnblad, respectively.

The starry company also includes Susan Anton (Velma Von Tussle), Corbin Bleu (Seaweed), Drew Carey (Wilbur Turnblad), Diana DeGarmo (Penny Pingleton), Mo Gaffney (Prudy Pingleton, the Gym Teacher, the Matron), Nick Jonas (Link Larkin), Darlene Love (Motormouth Maybelle), Tara Macri (Amber), John Stamos (Corny Collins) and Michael McDonald (Harriman F. Spritzer, the Principal, Mr. Pinky, the Guard).

The ensemble includes Bradley Benjamin, Denosh Bennett, Tiffany Daniels, Taylor Frey, Todrick D. Hall, Joey Haro, Amy Hillner, Chyka Jackson (Little Inez), Chauncey Jenkins, Derek Klena, Daniel LeClaire, Katharine Leonard, Kristolyn Lloyd, Tatiana Mac, NRaca, Jackie Seiden, Daniel Tatar, Jake Wilson, Timothy Wilson and Jessica Keenan Wynn.

Lon Hoyt is the musical director for the production. Mitchell was the original choreographer of Hairspray on Broadway, and Hoyt was the original musical director.

Marc Shaiman (music/co-lyricist) and Scott Wittman (co-lyricist), who are currently represented on Broadway with Catch Me If You Can, penned the Tony-winning score to Hairspray, which has a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. The musical won eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Show times at the Bowl are Aug. 5-6 at 8:30 PM and Aug. 7 at 7:30 PM.
