Off-Broadway News Zainab Jah and More Set for School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play Off-Broadway The world premiere from Jocelyn Bioh will play MCC Theater beginning in November.

The cast is now set for the MCC Theater world premiere of School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play. Performances of the play from Jocelyn Bioh will begin November 1 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Opening night is set for November 16. Indecent Tony winner Rebecca Taichman directs.

Appearing in the show will be Zainab Jah, who made her Broadway debut in Eclipsed last year and went on to star in Off-Broadway’s Venus, as well as Nabiiyah Be (Hadestown), MaameYaa Boafo (Untamed), Paige Gilbert (Street Children), Nike Kadri (The Death of the Last Black Man…), Abena Mensah-Bonsu (Ellis Island’s Ragtime), Mirirai Sithole (The Death of the Last Black Man), and Lortel Award nominee Myra Lucretia Taylor (Familiar).

The play centers around an exclusive boarding school in Ghana, where Paulina (Boafo) is queen bee. Her reign is threatened by the mid-year arrival of Ericka (Be), who catches the attention of her peers and a pageant recruiter.

The creative team will include set designer Arnulfo Maldonado, costume designer Dede Ayite, lighting designer Jen Schriever, sound designer Palmer Hefferan, and dialect coach Deborah Hecht. Casting is by Telsey + Company.

Bioh can currently be seen in Signature Theatre’s presentation of In the Blood as part of Suzan-Lori Parks’ Red Letter Plays.
