Luisa Fernanda, one of the most romantic "zarzuelas" of the century, is scheduled to run at Mexico City's Palacio de Bellas Artes May 31, Jun. 2, 4 & 7.

The "Zarzuela" is a popular form of Spanish Musical Theatre, born in Madrid during the 17th Century. "Zarzuelas" can be described as musical pieces with complex musical ensembles and arias, mixed with sophisticated dialogue, popular songs, and lowlife comedy characters.

Luisa Fernanda is a passionate love story set in 1868, in which "the characters move easily between the elegant comedy of manners and revolutionary politics; between the sophistication of Madrid and the simplicity of the Spanish countryside; and between romantic high spirits and near-tragic melancholy ." The piece, which features music by Federico Moreno Torroba and libretto by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernandez Shaw, world-premiered at Madrid's Teatro Calderon on March 26, 1932, and since then, has been performed around the world with great success.

Joining the Palacio de Bellas Artes Chorus and Orchestra in this production, are Milagros Martin as Luisa Fernanda, Alfredo Portilla as Javier Moreno, Jorge Lagunes as Vidal Hernando, Carmen Gonzalez as Carolina and Salvador Quiroz as Nogales. Javier Ulacia directs and Miguel Roa will be the musical conductor for the first three performances, while Enrique Patron de Rueda will conduct the final performance June 7.

Produced by the Opera of Bellas Artes in association with Madrid's Zarzuela Theatre, Luisa Fernanda will play at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, located in the historical center of the city; on May 31 at 5PM, Jun. 2 & 4 at 8PM, and Jun. 7 at 5PM .
