Classic Arts News Zwilich Trumpet Concerto Replaces Horn Concerto on New York Philharmonic Program The New York Philharmonic will perform Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's American Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra rather than her Horn Concerto on April 6 and 7, the orchestra announced.
Principal hornist Philip Myers, the scheduled soloist for the Horn Concerto, has withdrawn for personal reasons. Principal trumpeter Philip Smith will perform the American Concerto.

The performance will mark the New York premiere of the American Concerto, which was written for Tonight Show trumpeter Doc Severinson and debuted in 1994.

"The title of my American Concerto was chosen to pay tribute to the distinctive and virile style of American brass playing exemplified by Doc Severinsen, for whom I wrote it, and Phil Smith, who is playing it in this concert," Zwilich said. "Unlike his or her European counterparts, the American brass player typically has a broad background encompassing orchestra, band, and jazz idioms. This lends a special vitality and versatility to the playing."

The program also include Franck's Symphony in D minor, Mozart's Overture to Le nozze di Figaro, and Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3, with concertmaster Glenn Dicterow as soloist. Bramwell Tovey is the conductor.
