Crowley received two separate design nods for two very different sets: the languid, liquid and Orient-shaded Illyria of Twelfth Night, and the drab, washed-out, bleached-wood bar of The Iceman Cometh. Crowley also designed the costumes for the latter show.
Crowley already has one Tony, for his work in Nicholas Hytner's revival of Carousel, plus two previous nominations, for Les Liaisons Dangereuses and The Capeman.
An associate at the UK's Royal Shakespeare Company and Royal National Theater, Crowley's other New York credits include Racing Demon, Hapgood and The Judas Kiss. He also designed recent film versions of The Crucible and Suddenly Last Summer.
In 1990 Crowley won the Laurence Olivier Award for Designer of the Year.
