Aaron Jay Kernis will be the composer-in-residence at the Moab Music Festival in southeastern Utah this year, the festival announced.

The festival runs September 2-17 at Moab's Star Hall and other local venues, including a natural grotto formed by the Colorado River.

The opening-night concert will include Kernis's Nocturnes, as well as music by Mozart and Chausson. A concert on September 4 will focus on Kernis with Four Seasons of Futuristic Cuisine, Mozart En Route—A Little Traveling Music, and excerpts from Songs of Innocents.

Other festival highlights include performances by pianist Michael Boriskin and the Shanghai Quartet.

Leslie Tompkins and pianist Michael Barrett, who is also a co-founder of the New York Festival of Song and the director of the Caramoor Festival, founded the Moab Music Festival in 1992.
