The previously reported musical adaption of Alanis Morissette’s 1995 album Jagged Little Pill will make its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Performances will begin in May 2018. The ART’s artistic director, Tony winner Diane Paulus, will helm the production.

The musical will feature a book by Diablo Cody, who won an Oscar for the screenplay of Juno, and orchestrations and arrangements by Tom Kitt, the Tony- and Pulitzer-winning co-composer of Next to Normal and If/Then.

The show, which will showcase several songs from Morissette's Grammy-winning album, was initially announced in 2013. The original story will follow a modern, multi-generational family and will explore gender identity and race.

“This team that has come together for this Jagged Little Pill musical is my musical theatre dream come true,” said Morissette in a statement. “The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honored to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent. Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul’s marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom and complexity.”

The album, which Morissette co-wrote with Glen Ballard, earned her five Grammy Awards out of nine nominations, including Album of the Year. Songs expected to appear in the musical include “Ironic,” “You Oughta Know,” and “Hand in My Pocket.”

The producing team behind the project includes Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David, and Eva Price.

The ART's 2017–2018 season will also feature Burn All Night (previously titled Manhattan Kids), a new musical by Andy Mientus, Van Hughes, Nick LaGrasta, and Brett Moses. Jenny Koons will direct. Additional titles include Bedlam's Sense and Sensibility adaptation and the previously reported Michael Mayer-helmed Warhol Capote.
