This layoff is the result of Bloomberg shutting down its Muse: Arts & Culture section, along with other layoffs. Gerard tweeted Nov. 18, "Bloomberg News ended its culture coverage today. Godspeed to all my great colleagues." His last review for Bloomberg News was for the Broadway musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Bloomberg will continue to report on the arts, but its coverage will be coordinated with the website's luxury channel. Muse editor, Pulitzer Prize winner Manuela Hoelterhoff, said she will stay with the company but work in a different capacity.
Gerard's dismissal is another in a line of recent downsizes of arts coverage; in May 2013 the Village Voice laid off drama critic Michael Feingold and the Associated Press lessened its coverage of Off-Broadway, opera and dance productions.
