Classic Arts News Anna Netrebko Still Wants Austrian Citizenship Despite Negative Publicity Anna Netrebko intends to press ahead with her application for Austrian citizenship despite being called a traitor by fellow Russians.
The St. Petersburg Times had reported that the Russian soprano was canceling her application after being labeled a deserter. Netrebko wants Austrian citizenship because she must go through a complicated visa application for every trip to Europe and is limited to a total of 180 days per year in EU countries.

However, her manager told PlaybillArts that Russians didn't realize that she would be allowed to keep her Russian citizenship. "Anna will never deny her origins and she loves her country," he said.

The Times had reported that Netrebko had changed her mind after the media and fellow musicians accused her of being unpatriotic. She was quoted in the paper as saying, "Some of my fellow Mariinsky musicians would approach me and whisper dramatically, 'How could you do this?'"
