Karin Coonrod — who last staged Shakespeare's Julius Caesar for TFANA — returns to the New York troupe to tackle the Bard's Rome-set war drama at The Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College. The work began Feb. 12 for a run through March 5.
Coriolanus follows the titular war hero and the people of Rome's quest to make him one of the Consuls. When he is denied power, the plebeians — fearing he may revolt — banish him. Now, Coriolanus a respected Roman must decide whether his country or his vengeance are more important.
Camargo (Skylight, Kit Marlowe) stars in the title role opposite Broadway Bard veteran Maxwell (Othello, The Merchant of Venice) as Volumnia and Bougere (A Raisin In The Sun, The Tempest) as Aufidius.
The cast also features many TFANA vets including Curzon Dobell (Julius Caesar - TFANA), Michael Ray Escamilla (King John, Julius Caesar - TFANA), Jonathan Fried (Pericles - The Public Theatre), Jennifer Ikeda (Pericles - Public), Patrice Johnson (The Crucible), Ezra Knight (Cymbeline -TFANA), Matthew Maher (Richard III - Public), Simeon Moore (Julius Caesar - TFANA), Paul Niebanck (Pericles - TFANA), Michael Rogers (King John, Julius Caesar - TFANA), Charles Tuthill (Once in a Lifetime) and Anne Louise Zachry (Waste, Don Juan - TFANA).
The design team for Coriolanus are John Conklin (sets), Scott Zielinski (lights) and Anita Yavich (costumes). TFANA began their season with Colin Teevan's Svejk — an adaptation of Jaroslav Hasek's The Good Soldier Svejk and His Fortunes in the Great War, — starring Angels in America Tony Award winner Stephen Spinella as the title character. Next for the troupe, Life x 3 and "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?" actor John Turturro stars in Michael Feingold's new translation of Eduardo De Filippo's Souls of Naples.
