Farewell to Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild, 79, who died April 20 after a long illness. Great granddaughter of Baron James de Rothschild (founder of the French branch of the Rothschild banking family), the Baroness studied the sciences at the Sorbonne and at Columbia University but made her mark dispensing monies to arts and sciences foundations. Her subsequent friendship with choreographer Martha Graham led to significant support of the latter's Dance Company.
Baroness de Rothschild was especially generous to cultural groups in Israel -- her home since 1962. She co-founded the Bat-Dor Dance Company with Jeannette Ordman, as well as the Batsheva Foundation for the Advancement of Science in Israel.
