Daniel Goldstein directs the new staging of the work at the company's Boston University Theatre, May 20-June 26.
Featuring a cast of Broadway performers, Falsettos will star Kate Baldwin (Wonderful Town, Thoroughly Modern Millie) as Cordelia, Romain Frugé (The Full Monty, The Who's Tommy) as Whizzer, Linda Mugleston (Wonderful Town, Nine) as Trina, Anne L. Nathan (Assassins, Chicago) as Charlotte, Steve Routman (Victor/Victoria, Moon Over Buffalo) as Mendel, Geoffrey Nauffts (A Few Good Men, The Full Monty tour) as Marvin, and Jacob Brandt as Jason.
The 1992 Broadway production of Falsettos combined the Off-Broadway shows March of the Falsettos (1981) and Falsettoland (1990). The musical features the Tony Award-winning score by Finn and the Tony Award winning book by Finn and Lapine — who directed the work at the John Golden Theatre. Michael Rupert garnered a Tony nom for his portrayal of the wedded father, Marvin, who falls in love with a man. Chip Zien also starred in a cast that included Stephen Bogardus, Carolee Carmello, Jonathan Kaplan, Andrew Harrison Leeds, Heather MacRae and Barbara Walsh.
The production team is composed of up-and-coming theatre artists who are expected to bring a new look and feel to the work for the Huntington. Director Goldstein has served for three seasons at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, as resident director for the Mamma Mia national tour and associate director of Broadway's current All Shook Up.
He is joined by music director Michael Friedman (composed music for Huntington's The Blue Demon and Christopher Durang's Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge) and choreographer Seán Curran (The Rivals, James Joyce's The Dead). The design team includes David Korins (set), Miguel Angel Huidor (costumes), Donald Holder (lighting) and Zach Moore (sound).
Composer-lyricist Finn's oeuvre also includes Trousers, Romance in Hard Times, A New Brain and Elegies: A Song Cycle. The Boston native grew up in Natick, Massachusetts and graduated from Williams College.
Librettist-director Lapine has also collaborated with Stephen Sondheim on the Pulitzer Prize-winning Sunday in the Park with George, Merrily We Roll Along and Passion as well as penning the plays Luck, Pluck and Virtue, Twelve Dreams, Table Settings and Fran's Bed.
