Nick Dear's play, based on Mary Shelley's novel, was presented in 2011, directed by Danny Boyle. Cumberbatch and Miller shared both the Olivier Award and London Evening Standard Award for Best Actor for their respective performances, in which they alternated in the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature. National Theatre Live filmed the production twice so audiences could experience Cumberbatch and Miller in each role.

"Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein's bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker," press notes state. "Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale."

The production won Critics' Circle Theatre Awards for Best Actor (Cumberbatch) and Best Design (Mark Tildesley). Danny Boyle received the What's on Stage Award for Best Director.

Cumberbatch stars in the TV show "Sherlock," and his film credits include "August: Osage County," "The Fifth Estate" and "12 Years a Slave." He will star in Hamlet at the National Theatre in August 2015.

Miller appeared on Broadway in After Miss Julie. He stars on the TV show "Elementary" and has also appeared on "Dexter," "Eli Stone" and "Dracula 2000."
