News Bewitched Lovers at Center of Hexed in the City, a New Musical Getting NYC Readings June 15-20 A new musical called Hexed in the City hopes to bewitch theatregoers in public workshop presentations June 15-20 at the Belt Theatre in Manhattan.

The workshop is part of the Bard's Backyard initiative of Sonnet Repertory Theatre, Inc. The show is penned by Neil Berg and Tom Mills. Berg wrote music and lyrics, Mills wrote book and lyrics.

"Great romances and great musicals go hand-in-hand: Boy meets girl, boy loves girl, boy loses girl," according to the Hexed in the City announcement. "Antics ensue and a big, emotional, happy (sometimes) ending follows. But what if the girl is actually a witch? That means the age old story gets turned inside out and upside down!"

In the show, "Witches aren't permitted to love and boy doesn't even like girl. The only sure thing is that antics definitely ensue. It's love versus magic and all bets are off. This show will keep you guessing, leave you laughing, and send you out singing."

Tom Mills, known for staging piano-and-voice concerts for Musicals Tonight!, directs. Galen Butler is musical director.

The cast features Graham Rowat (The Thing About Men and Broadway's upcoming Dracula, the Musical), Vanessa Lemonides, David Sabella, Verna Pierce, Kevin Pease, Robyne Parrish, Matthew Martin, Michael Kayne, Robin Irwin, Christopher Callah, Carter Calvert (It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues, The Thing About Men), Todd Loyd, Jennifer Lyon and Scott Laughead. Composer Berg co-created the musical, The Prince and the Pauper, which played Off Broadway's Lamb's Theatre.

Berg is currently composing a new Broadway-aimed musical, Temptation, with writers Michael Leads (Swinging on a Star) and Grammy-nominated lyricist John Farster. Two of his musicals, Threads and Fiona: The Mother Goose Musical, played the Helen Hayes Theatre in Nyack, NY. He is also a respected musical director for more than 100 region shows.

Mills is the resident director for Musicals Tonight!, Which unearths old musicals and presents them in an intimate concert setting on a shoestring budget. He was the director-choreographer of A Little Night Music for the 2002 Cultural Olympiad in Salt Lake City.

Public performances of Hexed in the City are 10 PM June 15, 8 PM June 16, 10 PM June 18, 8 PM June 19, 2 & 5 PM June 20. Admission is $15.
