On Nov. 10 Crystal tweeted the following via Twitter: "Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show."

A spokesperson confirmed Crystal's hosting duties to the Times. It will mark the comedy veteran's tenth time hosting the Oscars.

Crystal's announcement comes on the heels of an Oscar night shake-up after Brett Ratner, who publicly used a gay slur, stepped down as producer of the telecast. Murphy, who had been developing the Oscar evening with Ratner, exited following the producer's departure.

Academy Award-winner Brian Grazer and Don Mischer will produce the awards.

Crystal's play 700 Sundays, which drew on his childhood experiences with his father, earned the 2005 Tony Award as Best Special Theatrical Event. Crystal's film credits include "Analyze That," "Running Scared," "City Slickers," "Throw Momma From The Train," "The Princess Bride," "When Harry Met Sally," "Mr. Saturday Night" and "America's Sweethearts."
