Nominees for the 2006 Suzi Bass Awards — Greater Atlanta's first professional theatre awards — were announced Sept. 11 at Libby's Cabaret.

Founded three years ago by director-playwright-actor Gene-Gabriel Moore, an Atlanta native, the awards were named for the late Suzi Bass, a respected stage and screen actor from Atlanta. In a previous statement creator Moore said, "My goal and the goal of the executive committee is to cast light upon outstanding theatre companies in five counties, and especially the measure of their respect for actors. These are theatre awards only for theatre people and by theatre people.”

The Suzi Bass Awards — honoring shows that opened between Aug. 1, 2005, and July 31, 2006 — will be presented Oct. 15 at 7 PM at the 14th Street Playhouse, at Juniper and 14th Streets, in Atlanta. The awards, according to press notes, were created to "recognize and foster professional theatrical excellence in the Atlanta area, to honor the late and beloved actress Suzi Bass, and to provide a valuable regional and national marketing tool for individual theatres and for the Atlanta professional theatre community as a whole."

The evening will also include the presentation of The Spirit of Suzi Bass Award, which is given to "a working performer or theatrical organization in metro Atlanta whose work mirrors Suzi Bass’ long-time embrace of professionalism in the theatre."
