News Broadway Theater Institute's 2003 Awards Go to Players Club, BMI Workshop, Editor John Willis and More Broadway Theater Institute, the not-for-profit group with the mission of "protecting, perpetuating and preserving" the history and experience of Broadway theatre, announced the 2003 recipients of its Awards for Excellence.

A ceremony will be held Sept. 15 at The Players Club, 16 Gramercy Park South. Gerard Alessandrini, award-winning writer and director of Forbidden Broadway, will emcee.

The roster of awardees and presenters include:

  • Award for Excellence in Theatre History Preservation, presented to The Players, accepted by Players president Timothy Hutton and presented by Shubert Organization chairman Gerald Schoenfeld.
  • Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to John Willis, editor of Theatre World since 1945, presented by actor and director Cliff Robertson.

  • Award for Excellence in Theatre Arts Education, presented to The BMI-Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, accepted by composer-lyricist Maury Yeston, presented by the creators of Avenue Q, Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx (alums of the workshop).
  • Award for Distinguished Service to the Theatre, presented to Materials for the Arts, accepted by executive director Harriet Taub, presented actor B. D. Wong.
  • Special Award presented to St. Malachy's-The Actors' Chapel on its 100th Anniversary, accepted by Fr. Joseph A. Kelly, S. J., presented by author, humorist and actor Malachy McCourt. Individual tickets begin at $125. The festivities will start with a cocktail reception at 6 PM. The program begins at 7 PM. BTI president Helen Marie Guditis and state Sen. Liz Kruger will speak,
