Mark St. Germain's play, which is based on the novel of the same name by Osha Gray Davidson, will be directed by Julianne Boyd, artistic director of Barrington Stage Company. Boyd also directed the play's premiere at Barrington in July 2011 and an encore run in October 2011.
The George Street cast will feature all four members of Barrington’s October production of the piece: Aisha Hinds, John Bedford Lloyd, Don Guillory and Susan Wands.
The Best of Enemies, according to press notes, is a "true story about the relationship between C.P. Ellis (a Grand Cyclops of the KKK) and Ann Atwater (an African-American civil rights activist) during the desegregation of the Durham, NC, schools in 1971. [The play] exposes the poison of prejudice in the hearts of Atwater and Ellis who, by facing each other, are forced to face the worst, and best, in themselves."
The Best of Enemies, according to George Street, is "recommended for mature audiences due to strong language."
Creating the world of the play will be scenic designer David M. Barber, costume designer Kristina Lucka, lighting designer Scott Pinkney and sound designer Brad Berridge. Individual tickets, starting at $28, are currently on sale. For information or tickets contact the GSP Box Office, (732) 246-7717, or visit www.GSPonline.org. George Street Playhouse is located at 9 Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick.
