Variety reports that Steven Antin, who penned the screenplay (later revised by Susannah Grant), will direct the film that casts Aguilera as a young Midwestern girl who arrives in Hollywood seeking stardom. Cher is signed to play Tess, a former dancer and the struggling owner of a burlesque club who gives Aguilera her first shot at success. Cher, who earned an Oscar for her performance in "Moonstruck," will sing in the film, which is produced by Donald De Line. Filming begins in November.
"[Cher] brings a soulfulness and gravitas to this character that will ground the story," Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper told Variety. "The only person who was more excited than I am is Christina."
The music star currently appears in Cher at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. She has earned Grammy Awards for her lengthy recording career and made her Broadway debut as Sissy in the 1982 production of Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, a role she later repeated on film. Her screen credits include "Mask," "Silkwood" (Golden Globe Award), "Moonstruck" (Academy Award/Golden Globe), "The Witches of Eastwick," "Mermaids" and "Tea with Mussolini."
