The final program of the television series aired on the BBC Sept. 16. In contrast to previous weeks, when Webber and his fellow judges voted contestants off the show, the final three candidates where subjected to an audience vote. According to the show's website, more than two million votes were received. The other two remaining contestants were Helena Blackman and Siobhan Dillon.
"I feel on top of the world, thanks very much," said Fisher. "I won't let you down. Every night will be an opening night. Thanks for making my dreams come true."
In the show, in which each finalist was given a pithy qualifying moniker, Fisher was known as "Intense Maria."
The judges were Webber, British voice coach Zoe Tyler, The Sound of Music co-producer David Ian and London actor John Barrowman.
The upcoming West End revival of The Sound of Music is scheduled to begin previews at the London Palladium Nov. 4. Directed by Jeremy Sams, the musical will officially open Nov. 14.
