News   Dallas Theater Center's The Wiz, Starring Trisha Jeffrey, Begins Performances July 8 Trisha Jeffrey, Sydney James Harcourt, James Tyrone Lane and David Ryan Smith journey to Oz in the Dallas Theater Center production of The Wiz, presented in collaboration with the Dallas Black Dance Theatre, beginning July 8.

DTC artistic director Kevin Moriarty directs the funky take on "The Wizard of Oz" that will run through Aug. 7 in the Wyly Theatre. The Wiz has choreography by Christopher Lance Huggins and musical direction by Lindy Heath Cabe.

Jeffrey (Rent, All Shook Up, Little Shop of Horrors) plays Dorothy, with Harcourt (American Idiot, Bells Are Ringing) as the Tinman, Lane (The Scottsboro Boys, A Chorus Line) as the Scarecrow and Smith (Passing Strange) as the Lion.

The cast also includes Hassan El-Amin and Liz Mikel as Uncle Henry/the Wiz and Addaperle/Evillene, respectively, and Denise Lee as Aunt Em/Glenda.

Completing the ensemble are Claude Alexander III, Major Attaway, Feleceia Benton, Katricia Eaglin, Richard A. Freeman, Jr., Stephanie Hal, Candace Hamblett–Holford, Michelle Hebert, Diana Herrera, Rachel McSween, Amber J. Merrick, Calvin Roberts, Derrick Smith, Sean Smith, Jamie Thompson and Tyrone C. Walker.

The Wiz is designed by Jo Winiarski (scenic design), Wade Laboissonniere (costume design), Chad R. Jung (lighting design), Charles R. Parsley II (sound design) and Cookie Jordan (wig design). Elaine Davidson is the conductor. William F. Brown wrote the book for the soulful contemporary retelling of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" that features music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls.
