Conceived five years ago at a 50th birthday party for composer Elton John, Burn the Floor was created by producer Harley Medcalf and features 32 champion ballroom dancers. About the genesis of his show, Medcalf recently said, “I wanted to create a showcase that is a fusion of the wonderful traditions of ballroom dancing, a combination of the sensuality, discipline and commitment of the dancers, with the technology, creativity and energy of a rock and roll production.” Burn the Floor features direction and choreography by Jason Gilkison as well as Angela Teek as the featured vocalist. The evening features a variety of dance — waltz, cha-cha, samba, rumba, lindy, jive and swing — combined with visual effects and sound.
As of press time, the 2003 tour schedule includes the Paramount Theatre in Cedar Rapids, IA (March 25), Fox Theatre in Detroit, MI (March 28-30), Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City, UT (April 4-6), The Centre in Vancouver, BC (April 9-12), the Music Hall in Dallas, TX (April 15-20) and the Hummingbird Centre in Toronto, Ontario (April 22-27).
