Headly will assume the role created by Rita Wilson. Alexander is taking over the role originated by the author. Wilson and David's last performance will be June 7. The limited engagement of the production, originally scheduled through June 7, has been extended for six weeks through July 19.
A former member of the Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble, Headly has extensive stage credits, including The Philanthropist at Manhattan Theatre Club and the New Group's 2013 The Jacksonian.
The play, from the creator and star of HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and co-creator of “Seinfeld," is directed by Tony Award winner Anna D. Shapiro. David's dysfunctional family comedy officially opened on Broadway March 5 at the Cort Theatre.
Prior to its first preview (Feb. 2, 2015), the world premiere had taken in over $13.5 million in advance sales at the box office. That figure was the highest advance for any spring production on Broadway and, according to the New York Times, beat the previous record for a play, $13.05 million for the 2013 revival of Harold Pinter's Betrayal (produced by Scott Rudin, also the producer of Fish in the Dark). It recently recouped its entire capitalization. For the week of May 11-17, the production played to 101.6 percent capacity (the extra due to standing room), bringing in $1,208,230 at the box office.
