News   Dorfman's Widows to Play 59E59 Theaters; Casting Announced Widows, Ariel Dorfman's new play adapted from his acclaimed 1983 novel, will make its New York premiere Jan. 10 at 59E59 Theaters.

Directed by Hal Brooks, the limited engagement will run through Feb. 3 with an official opening scheduled for Jan. 18. Ching Valdes-Aran will head a cast of 18 that also includes Josh Alexander, Mark Alhadeff, Veronica Cruz, Sam Dingman, Sarah Nina Hayon, Mercedes Herrero, Guiesseppe Jones, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ephraim Lopez, Melissa Miller, Sean J. Moran, Gita Reddy, James Saba, Anca Suiu, Joaquin Torres and Audrey Lynn Weston and Yan Xi.

"At the riverbank of a war-torn village," read Widows press notes, "a male body washes ashore. Though the face of the man is unrecognizable, all the women claim him as her own. A power-struggle ensues between the local authorities and the women demanding the right to bury their loved ones. . . . [The play is Dorfman's] powerful, poetic and striking testament to the disappeared — those who vanish under totalitarian regimes the world over."

The design team comprises Wilson Chin (sets), Colin D. Young (lights), Kimberly Glennon (costume) and Matt O'Hara (sound). Samone B. Weissman is the production stage manager.

Dorfman's plays also include Death and the Maiden (Olivier Award), Reader, Speak Truth To Power (Kennedy Center), Purgatorio, Picasso's Closet, The Other Side (MTC) and the new musical Dancing with the Shadows.
