Little Voice, a film adaptation of the Jim Cartwright play The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, is currently in production at Miramax. The film stars Michael Caine, Brenda Blethyn, Jim Broadbent, Ewan McGregor and Jane Horrocks.
Little Voice screenwriter Mark Herman also directs.
For the film Horrocks is repeating her London stage role of a painfully introverted girl with a talent for mimicking the singing voices of Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey and Judy Garland -- a talent that is exploited to the max by her mother's agent-boyfriend.
The play was critically acclaimed in London, where it won the 1992 Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy; it fared less well in a 1994 Broadway production, where it closed after only nine performances.
No release date has been announced for the film.
