Welch, who also pens the band's songs, will collaborate with longtime friend, costume designer Sophie Hart-Walsh, who said, "We always used to write songs about our lives and sing them to each other. We always said we should make them into a musical."
No details on subject matter or firm plans were revealed, though Welch added, "It would be amazing to get it into the West End. That's obviously the dream goal."
Florence + the Machine has released two albums, "Lungs" in 2009 and "Ceremonials" in 2011. The group played a sold-out Radio City concert last May, which was broadcast on Fuse TV. Stand-out songs include "Dog Days Are Over," "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)," "Howl," "Shake It Out," "What the Water Gave Me" and "Never Let Me Go."
The group's song "Shake It Out" was performed on "Smash," and the Broadway production of Venus in Fur used "Kiss With a Fist" for its bows.
