The show features music by Nacio Herb Brown, lyrics by Seattle-area native Arthur Freed and a book by Betty Comden and Adolph Green (based on their screenplay). The score includes such celebrated songs as "Good Morning," "All I Do Is Dream of You," "Broadway Melody," "You Are My Lucky Star," "Moses Supposes," "Make 'Em Laugh," and the title song (featuring a drenching dance scene, just as the flim did).

The Tony-nominated stage version made its Broadway debut on July 2, 1985 and ran for 367 performances. The licensed version of the show includes revisions since the Broadway production, which was directed and choreographed by Twyla Tharp. Jeff Rizzo serves as musical director and conductor.
