Former Phantom of the Opera title player Davis Gaines will be part of the Rubicon Theatre's upcoming presentation of Side by Side by Sondheim.

Gaines joins the previously announced Teri Ralston and Tami Tappan Damiano for the production of the Stephen Sondheim revue. Directed by Nick DeGruccio, Side By Side will play the California theatre July 22-Aug. 22. Lee Martino will choreograph with musical direction by David Potter. (Although the show runs through Aug. 22, Gaines will play his final performance Aug. 19.) The musical will also feature a rotating cast of narrators, including "Golden Girls" star Rue McClanahan, Follies stars Betty Garrett and Polly Bergen, stage and screen actor Richard Kline and Tony Award winner Donna McKechnie.

Davis Gaines received the Bay Area Critics' Award for Best Actor for his work as the Phantom in the West Coast production of The Phantom of the Opera, a role he repeated on Broadway. His other theatrical credits include the world premiere of Whistle Down the Wind as well as Encores! The Boys From Syracuse; Hello, Dolly!; Forbidden Broadway and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Gaines has sung with virtually every major symphony orchestra in North America, and his two solo recordings, "Against the Tide" and "All My Tomorrows: Songs of Sammy Cahn," are available on LAP Records.

Side By Side By Sondheim features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim with additional music by Leonard Bernstein, Mary Rodgers, Richard Rodgers and Jule Styne. The revue played Broadway's Music Box Theatre April 1977-Feb. 1978 before transferring to the Morosco Theatre, where it played through March 1978. The original Broadway cast included David Kernan, Millicent Martin, Julie N. McKenzie and Ned Sherrin.
