Houston, who died Feb. 11 at the age of 48, was referenced during Oda Mae Brown's second act song "I'm Outta Here," in which the outrageous medium sings:
THEY SAY THAT MONEY CAN CORRUPT YOUR SOUL
AM I HEADED DOWN THAT SLIPPERY SLOPE
AND MUTLI-MILLIONAIRES CAN FLIP THEIR LID
AND I…
COULD END UP JUST LIKE WHITNEY DID
I'LL TAKE THAT RISK
The authors have now replaced "Whitney" with "Britney," a reference to pop starlet Britney Spears. The lyrical reference to Houston was performed during a special sneak preview of Ghost on Jan. 19 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Da’Vine Joy Randolph plays Oda Mae in the Broadway production. The currently-running London production incorporated the change several weeks ago.
Ghost has music and lyrics by Grammy Award winner Dave Stewart (of the Eurythmics) and Glen Ballard. Oscar-winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin adapted his original screenplay for the musical, and also contributes lyrics.
Ghost The Musical will officially open on Broadway April 23.
Tony Award-winning director Matthew Warchus (God of Carnage, The Norman Conquests, Boeing-Boeing, La Bête), who staged the London production, repeats his work on Broadway along with the original London design team.
The cast is lead by original London leads Richard Fleeshman ("Coronation Street," Legally Blonde) in his Broadway debut as Sam and Caissie Levy (Hair, Wicked, Hairspray) as his girlfriend Molly.
