Goodspeed Opera House will present two new musicals, A Visit From the Footbinder and Dorian, the first fruit of a creative partnership with the BMI-Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in New York.

The musicals have been developed over the past two weeks at the East Haddam, CT, theatre, and will give performances to invited audiences Dec. 20 and 21.

A Visit From the Footbinder has book and lyrics by David Dreyfus and music by Jeff Hardey, based on Emily Prager's short story. Elizabeth Margate will direct; Bob Goldstone will be musical director.

Dorian, with book, music and lyrics by Richard Gleaves, is based on Oscar Wilde's The Portrait of Dorian Gray. Director: Gabriel Barre. Musical director: Michael O'Flaherty.

The BMI Musical Theatre Workshop was created by Broadway musical director Lehman Engel in the 1970s as a way for new musicals to be developed in a protected environment. The workshop was continued after Engel's 1982 death by a steering committee of workshop members, including Maury Yeston, Ed Kleban, Alan Menken, Walter Edgar "Skip" Kennon, and Ellen Fitzhugh. The workshop now bears Engel's name. -- By Robert Viagas
