The concert, conducted by Bernstein prot_g_ Marin Alsop, featured Kristin Chenoweth as Cunegonde; Patti LuPone as the old lady; Paul Groves as Candide; Sanford Olsen in the roles of Vanderdendur and Ragotski; and Thomas Allen as the narrator, Dr. Pangloss, and Voltaire.

Actor and director Lonny Price, who directed the staged performance, also directed the telecast.

The two-act operetta, which debuted on Broadway in 1956, is based on Voltaire's novel, with lyrics by poet Richard Wilbur. The story follows the adventures of the hero Candide, who manages to remain comically optimistic in the face of harrowing events.
