The rent at The Actors' Playhouse on Seventh Avenue is too high for operator Peter Breger, he told the paper. He said the rent at the 170-seat Off-Broadway theatre has doubled in the last six years, and he can no longer make a go of it. He's operated the space since 1995, but it has a rich history prior to that. The owner of the property is Duell Management, which, Breger suggested, is not planning to continue the space for live performance.

In recent years several Off-Broadway theatres, including the Variety Arts and the Promenade, have shuttered due to developers' residential or retail plans.
