News Hands On a Hardbody Will Truck Into Broadway's Brooks Atkinson; Cast and Design Team Confirmed The Brooks Atkinson Theatre will be the Broadway garage of Hands On a Hardbody, the new musical about a gaggle of American dreamers engaged in an endurance test to win a pickup truck. Peter and the Starcatcher will vacate the Atkinson in January. Hands On a Hardbody will begin Feb. 23, 2013, prior to a March 21 opening.

Inspired by the 1997 documentary film of the same name, the musical features a book by Doug Wright (Pulitzer Prize winner, I Am My Own Wife), lyrics by Amanda Green (Bring It On: The Musical), music by Trey Anastasio (Phish) and Green, direction by Neil Pepe (Broadway's Speed-The-Plow) and musical staging by Sergio Trujillo (Memphis, Jersey Boys).

Here's how the populist musical is billed: "For ten hard-luck Texans, a new lease on life is so close they can touch it. Under a scorching sun for days on end, armed with nothing but hope, humor and ambition, they'll fight to keep at least one hand on a brand new truck in order to win it. In the hilarious, hard-fought contest that is Hands On a Hardbody only one winner can drive away with the American Dream."

The company will also feature Allison Case, Jay Armstrong Johnson, David Larsen, Jacob Ming-Trent, Kathleen Elizabeth Monteleone, Jim Newman, Connie Ray, Jon Rua, Keala Settle, Dale Soules, Scott Wakefield and William Youmans.

The troupe represents the full cast from the spring 2012 La Jolla Playhouse engagement in California. The producers of the Broadway run of the La Jolla Playhouse production of the musical are Broadway Across America (John Gore, Thomas B. McGrath, Beth Williams), Barbara Whitman, Latitude Link, Dede Harris, Sharon Karmazin, and Howard and Janet Kagan.

The Atkinson is at 256 W. 47th Street. Ticket information will be announced shortly.

Hands On a Hardbody's design team includes Tony Award-winning scenic designer Christine Jones (American Idiot), Tony-winning costume designer Susan Hilferty (Wicked), Tony-winning lighting designer Kevin Adams (Spring Awakening), Tony-winning sound designer Steve Canyon Kennedy (Jersey Boys), orchestrator Trey Anastasio, and vocal arranger/musical director Carmel Dean (American Idiot).
