News He's Got Life: Hair Composer MacDermot Performs with Staten Island Philharmonic Dec. 18 The Staten Island Philharmonic welcomes Hair composer Galt MacDermot Dec. 18 for a special concert to celebrate his 80th birthday.

MacDermot, who penned "Aquarius," "Let the Sunshine In" and "Good Morning Starshine," plays piano for the concert, which features his orchestral compositions, including the "Saxophone Concerto" with Alan Won, as well as songs penned for the New Pulse Jazz Band and music from his popular catalogue.

Joining MacDermot and the Staten Island Philharmonic are musicians from the band of the forthcoming Broadway revival of Hair. Jose Alejandro Guzman conducts the orchestra.

Hair will return to Broadway in February 2009 following an extended run at the Delacorte Theater last summer in Central Park. In addition to Hair, MacDermot has composed "Ode to the Arcane Borough" for the Staten Island Composers Project, as well as the musicals Two Gentleman of Verona, Dude, Via Galactica and The Human Comedy. The album from MacDermot and New Pulse, "Leap of Faith," is currently available on Kilmarnock Records.

A 6:30 PM reception with the artists precedes the concert. Tickets for the concert and reception are priced $40, while concert-only seats are available for $25. For tickets and further information, phone (718) 273-3250 or e-mail [email protected].

The concert will take place at the Veterans Hall at Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island.
