Deadline.com reports that ABC is currently developing the series for next fall.

Writer Bob Kushell will pen the script for ABC Studios and will also executive produce the hour-long program with David Knoller. In addition to starring in the series, Menzel will also produce with her manager, Heather Reynolds.

The untitled series, according to Deadline.com, is a "mother-daughter relationship drama in the vein of 'Gilmore Girls.' ... [Menzel will portray a] single mother of a teenager who, to make ends meet, waits tables and performs at weddings and bar mitzvahs, odd jobs that Menzel herself worked early on while pursuing a Broadway career."

The musical theatre star may also return to her role as Lea Michele's mother on the hit Fox series "Glee."

Menzel won a Tony Award for Leading Actress in a Musical for her work as Elphaba in Wicked; she also opened the London production of that hit musical. Menzel created the role of Maureen in the original Broadway company of Rent, and her other theatrical credits include the City Center Encores! production of Hair, Manhattan Theatre Club's The Wild Party, the Public Theater's See What I Wanna See and the benefit Funny Girl concert. Menzel's screen credits include "Glee," "Ask the Dust," "Rent" and "Enchanted."
