Drama Critics Circle Awards In Flagrante Gothicto, a satiric mating of "Wuthering Heights," "Jane Eyre" and "Rebecca," was the big winner at the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Awards, taking home the major creative awards including Best Production, Best Direction (Jillian Armenante) and Best Writing (Jillian Armenante and Alice Dodd), as well as the Ted Schmitt Award for outstanding world premiere of a new play. The Circle X Theatre staging won three of its six nominations. In the musical category, the most lauded production was not Disney's Tony Award-winning The Lion King, which took home two costuming and one lighting honor, but the Hudson Theatre's bare, which garnered the Best Musical Score, Best Musical Direction, Best Choreography and Best Design.

Other special awards were given to D. Martyn Bookwaiter and John Iacovelli, both awarded for lifetime achievements in lighting and set design. The Margaret Harford Award for sustained excellence in the theater went to International City Theatre, while Carolyn Hennesy received the Natalie Schafer Award for an emerging comic actress.
