News Islington Girl Goes West: Hedda Gabler Opens in London May 27 The Almeida Theatre, in London’s Islington District, has recently become one of the West End’s most frequent suppliers.

Hard on the heels of transfers of The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? and Festen, Richard Eyre’s Almeida staging of Hedda Gabler has also jumped west. The show opens at the Duke of York’s May 27. Eve Best, who won the Critics’ Circle Best Actress Award for her performance in Mourning Becomes Electra at the National, plays Hedda. Benedict Cumberbatch is George Tesman. Lisa Dillon — who recently starred in another London Ibsen, The Master Builder, opposite Patrick Stewart — will play Thea Elvsted. Iain Glen as Judge Brack, Jamie Sives as Eilert Loevborg and Gillian Raine as Juliana Tesman complete the line-up.

Rob Howell designs, with lighting by Peter Mumford. The show is produced by Robert Fox with Almeida Productions.
