After three weeks of previews to warm up, Whoopi Goldberg will have her official press opening March 6 inA Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum on Broadway.

Goldberg has taken over the central character from Nathan Lane in the hit revival of the Stephen Sondheim/Larry Gelbart/Burt Shevelove musical. Though the part is written for a male, Gelbart changed some lines to the role could be played as a woman. Set in Roman times, Forum is the story of a wily slave's increasingly complicated efforts to win the hand of a young woman for his master -- and thereby earn his own freedom.

The producers asked critics to wait three weeks before reviewing her performance. This is Goldberg's first Broadway appearance since her one woman show in 1984.

Whoopi's boyfriend Frank Langella, currently starring in Present Laughter on Broadway, is expected to be there to cheer her on, according to a Forum spokesperson. Langella's understudy, listed as John Wojda, will go on in his place.

Have you seen Whoopi in the role? Please share your experience and tell everyone what the show is like with Goldberg in it. Post your review to [email protected] Responses will be posted as they come in.
