Part of the radio theater series "The Play’s The Thing," the live performances at the Skirball Cultural Center will be recorded for future radio broadcast.

Anna in the Tropics is Nilo Cruz's 2003 Pulitzer Prize winning drama about a man hired as a reader in a 1929 Florida-based Cuban cigar factory whose tales come to life as he becomes involved with the unhappily married daughter of the owner.

Smits is joined in the cast by Alma Martinez (LATW's Zoot Suit), Jonathan Nichols (Beauty of the Father - Seattle Rep), Winston Rocha (Electricidad - Mark Taper), Onahoua Rodriguez (Between Us – La Comuna Theatre), Adriana Sevan (LATW's, Our Lady of 121st St.) and Herbert Siguenza (of the troupe Culture Clash).

Brooklyn-born Smits, who appears in the current "Star Wars" movie, originated the role of Juan Julian for the Broadway run of Anna in the Tropics. The actor is known for his work on television in "The West Wing," "L.A. Law" and "NYPD Blue." He has also been seen Off-Broadway in Much Ado About Nothing, Twelfth Nightand Hamlet as part of The Public Theatre's Shakespeare in the Park series.

L.A.T.W.'s nationally syndicated radio show "The Play's The Thing" series is performed live at the Skirball Cultural Center. All performances are recorded for future broadcast to cities including Boston, Seattle, Santa Fe as well as on XM Satellite radio. The two-hour radio broadcasts include special backstage features and interviews with actors, playwrights, and directors. The L.A.
