The comedy will star Laura Dern as a self-destructive woman who suddenly decides to turn her life around, creating chaos at work and home. Mike White, Luke Wilson, Diane Ladd (Dern's mother), Timm Sharp and Amy Hill will also star. Mitchell is best-known for performing the title role in the stage and film musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch; he wrote the musical's book and the film's screenplay and directed the film. He also directed the film "Shortbus" and the upcoming adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire's play Rabbit Hole. He adapted and directed Tennessee Williams' The Kingdom of Earth for the Drama Dept. Stage acting credits include The Secret Garden, Six Degrees of Separation, Big River, The Destiny of Me, Hello Again and Missing Persons.
Demme recently directed Beth Henley's Family Week at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. An Academy Award winner for "Silence of the Lambs," his other screen credits include "Rachel Getting Married," "The Manchurian Candidate," "Neil Young: Heart of Gold," "Beloved," "Philadelphia," "Married to the Mob" and "Melvin and Howard."
