The Julie Taymor-helmed Broadway revival of M. Butterfly, starring Clive Owen, will close even sooner than expected. In late November producers announced that the open-ended revival would close January 14, 2018, after playing 19 previews and 93 regular performances.

Instead of weeks, theatregoers now have only days left to see the production. A new closing date has just been announced for Sunday, December 17.

M. Butterfly opened October 26 at the Cort Theatre to cool critical notices. The revival marked Owen’s return to Broadway; the Oscar nominee plays Rene Gallimard, who falls for a mysterious Beijing opera sing named Song Liling. Taking on the role of his lover is Jin Ha, who recently appeared in the Chicago company of Hamilton.

Song’s true nature, including gender identity and allegiance, is revealed over the course of the two’s decades-long relationship. The new staging incorporates elements inspired by the real-life affair that served as the initial springboard for the piece.
