A.S.K. Theatre Projects has announced that the fourth annual Kids' Week at the Theatre will take place May 5-13, 2001. Once again, participating theatres throughout L.A. County will offer free tickets, backstage tours, open rehearsals and hands-on workshops for youths 18 and under.
The 2001 event has expanded to nine days ("from Cinco de Mayo to Mother's Day"). One of the highlights of the schedule is Flower Drum Song at the Ahmanson. Other participating companies include A Noise Within, Bob Baker's Marionettes, El Portal, East L.A. Classic Theatre Co., International City Theatre, Lulu Washington Dance Theatre, Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, Pasadena Playhouse and many others.
The mission of Kids' Week is to encourage children and their families to attend live theatre and become more involved in the performing arts year-round by raising awareness and creating opportunities for attendance during one special week.
"Every artist has a unique responsibility to serve families in his or her community," said Kids' Week steering committee member Jay McAdams of the 24th St. Theatre. "Historically, artists have been teachers, the active interpreters of society. By the very nature of the work we do, we impact the community and, ultimately, the world."
A.S.K. Theatre Projects is a nonprofit local and national resource for theatre and theatre artists that offers a wide range of artistic and educational programs. For information call (310) 281-1910 or visit www.kidsweek.org
