Browning's historical novel was set in medieval Rome and dealt with a nobleman who shocked society when he murdered his wife and her adopted parents.

Browning created poetic dramatic monologues for each of the trial participants, taken from court records.

Directed by Brenda Urquhart, The Ring and the Book stars King Stuart as Pope Innocent XII, who ruled over the trial in an age when church and state were linked.

Produced by Ann Greyson the cast also includes: Richard Chassler, Carolyn Alexis Chiodini, Walter DuRant, Jerry Goble, Ken McFarlane, Vito Viscuso and Lisa Zee. Through Sept. 11 at the Metropole Theatre Works, 1277 N. Wilton Place. Call (323) 660-8587.
