A Time to Kill (Broadway at the John Golden Theatre). Rupert Holmes' stage adaptation of A Time to Kill, based on John Grisham's best-selling novel, features Tom Skerritt, Patrick Page, Tony Award winner Tonya Pinkins, Chike Johnson, Ashley Williams, Dashiell Eaves, J.R. Horne, John Procaccino, Tijuana Ricks, Lee Sellars, Sebastian Arcelus, Fred Dalton Thompson and John Douglas Thompson. A Time to Kill, the popular courtroom drama, "tells the emotionally charged, now-iconic story of a young, idealistic lawyer, Jack Brigance, defending a black man, Carl Lee Hailey, for taking the law into his own hands following an unspeakable crime committed against his young daughter," according to press notes. "Their small Mississippi town is thrown into upheaval, and Jake finds himself arguing against the formidable district attorney, Rufus Buckley, and under attack from both sides of a racially divided city. A Bed and a Chair: A New York Love Affair (Off-Broadway at New York City Center). Three-time Tony winner Bernadette Peters stars in A Bed and a Chair, a collaboration between Tony-winning composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim and jazz musician-composer Wynton Marsalis. Directed by Tony winner John Doyle, the Encores! Special Event also boasts Tony nominees Norm Lewis and Jeremy Jordan, Cyrille Aimée and dancers Meg Gillentine, Tyler Hanes, Grasan Kingsberry and Elizabeth Parkinson. A Bed and a Chair, presented by the combined forces of City Center’s Encores! program and Jazz at Lincoln Center, "celebrates love in New York and love of New York. Native Manhattanite Sondheim and adopted citizen Marsalis (originally from New Orleans) will compare musical notes on their shared passion for our city," according to press notes. Luce (Off-Broadway at the Claire Tow Theater). Neal Huff, Marin Hinkle and Okieriete Onaodowan star in the LCT3 world premiere of JC Lee's Luce. Here's how the play is billed: "When a teacher makes an alarming discovery about Luce (Onaodowan), an all-star high school student, Luce's parents (Hinkle and Huff) are forced to reckon with their idealized image of their son, adopted years ago from a war-torn African country."
