The work, slated for a March 2006 production, is billed as "a theatrical music event inspired by the phenomenon of Imelda Marcos." The premiere will play at Australia's Adelaide Festival at the Ridley Centre - Royal Adelaide Showground which "will be transformed into a giant dance club with singers, multiple video screens and operating bar."
Here Lies Love follows the story of "Imelda Marcos and her husband [who] ruled The Philippines for decades. She loved the nightlife in all parts of the world, and in New York at Studio 54, so much so that she installed a disco in her NYC townhouse!" Show materials explain "It was a non-stop party, featuring politicians, arms dealers, financiers, artists, musicians and the international jet set."
The infamous shoe fanatic caused controversy with her excesses in the early 1980's. Most of the country lived in poverty during the reign (1965-1986) of husband Ferdinand Marcos. In 1986, the Marcos regime was overthrown and the couple fled the country. Imelda Marcos would return to her homeland and seek office as president after the death of her husband. She was defeated twice, but served on the Philippine House of Representatives. In 2001, when her term ended, she was charged with corruption and extortion committed for approximately $684 million that went missing from the Filipino treasury during her husband's presidency. (She had previously been accused of similar charges in 1995, but was acquitted.)
