The latest Installment of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s #Hamildrop series features Mobb Deep—the hip hop duo consisting of Havoc and the late Prodigy—on a track inspired by the Tony and Pulitzer-winning musical.
“Boom Goes the Cannon,” released June 18, samples lyrics from Hamilton’s “Right Hand Man,” introducing George Washington and the early developments of the American Revolution. Listen to the track below, or stream and download here.
The New York-based group was one of Miranda’s myriad inspirations for his score; a direct reference to their “Shook Ones Part II” lies in the title character’s lyrics in “My Shot.” “Rest in peace, Prodigy,” Miranda tweeted as he shared the track, adding, “Thank you Havoc.” Prodigy died in June 2017 following complications from sickle-cell anemia.
Miranda’s musical, itself inspired by several pop, hip hop, and rap artists, has inspired several covers and remixes, including those heard on the 2016 The Hamilton Mixtape. In lieu of a follow-up to that album, the composer launched the #Hamildrop series, offering Hamilton-inspired content every month through December.
Recent #Hamildrop installments have included five Eliza Hamiltons performing an early version of “Burn,” The Regrettes covering “Helpless,” and a mashup of “The Story of Tonight” with Dear Evan Hansen’s “You Will Be Found” titled “Found Tonight.”
